Did you know that there were prophecies (divine message from God) of Jesus Christ’s birth before he was born? It’s true!! Heavenly Father wanted people to know of this event before hand so they could start declaring it to others. Many prophets in the Bible and Book of Mormon foretold Jesus Christ’s birth and ministry hundreds of years before the actual event. We will look at a few of those.
The first prophecy happened 700 years before His birth. Isaiah, a prophet in the Old Testament, prophesied that a pure woman would give birth to Heavenly Father’s Son. In Isaiah 7:14, it reads; ““Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Also, in Isaiah 9:6; “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
Nephi, who was a prophet in the Book of Mormon, saw in a vision the virgin Mary, and baby Jesus. In 1 Nephi 11:18-21, he tells of his vision;
“And he said unto me: Behold, the virgin whom thou seest is the mother of the Son of God, after the manner of the flesh.
“And it came to pass that I beheld that she was carried away in the Spirit; and after she had been carried away in the Spirit for the space of a time the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!
“And I looked and beheld the virgin again, bearing a child in her arms.
“And the angel said unto me: Behold the Lamb of God, yea, even the Son of the Eternal Father!”
Around 83 B.C. (which stands for Before Christ) Alma, a prophet in the Book of Mormon, prophesied to the people of Gideon that “The Son of God cometh upon the face of the earth.” “And behold, he shall be born of Mary… bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.” He prophesied not only of his birth but of his mission here on earth. Alma 7:9-12.
Not only was there prophesies of His birth, and mission here on earth, there were prophesies about events that would happen before his birth. Samuel, the Lamanite, prophesied these signs in the Book of Mormon: Helaman 14: 2-3, 5.
“Behold, I give unto you a sign; for five years more cometh, and behold, then cometh the Son of God to redeem all those who shall believe on his name.
“… There shall be great lights in heaven, insomuch that in the night before he cometh there shall be no darkness, insomuch that it shall appear unto man as if it was day. …
“And behold, there shall a new star arise, such an one as ye never have beheld; and this also shall be a sign unto you”
There are a few events that were prophesies of Christ’s birth that I will talk about in the days to come. Those are the angel visiting the virgin Mary, and an angel visiting Shepherds. These were such big events in the whole grand scheme of things that they deserve their own days.
Whew! What a lot of information.
I hope it wasn’t too much for you. But can you believe it?! There are actually quite a few more prophecies of His life and mission here on earth, but I wanted to focus on his birth. I hope this gave you a look into how important this event was! Heavenly Father didn’t want just one person, to declare of His sons birth, He wanted everyone to know!
Please come back tomorrow as we learn more about the virgin Mary! What a special lady she is!
It is my hope that we will come to understand the true meaning of Christmas, and that is Jesus Christ. He loves you, and I hope that you will come to understand that love!
Merry Christmas, I love you all!
